The PLANET is the new high-pressure neutron beamline now being constructed at the intense pulsed neutron source J-PARC. This beamline aims at revealing the effect of water on dynamics of the interior of the Earth and planets by using the neutron character that is sensitive to hydrogen. The most characteristic feature of this beamline is to posses the huge 6-axis press with the maximum load of 500 ton/axis, which can simultaneously generate high-pressure and high-temperature condition of 30GPa and 2000 K. Coupled with the state-of-the-art techniques in neutron diffraction and radiography, the beamline offers the microscopic and macroscopic information of materials at high-PT condition. We stared designing at 2008 and already installed all the beamline components except those scheduled to be installed inside the experimental hutch. The huge press and detector banks have been constructed and are waiting to be installed. The installation will be finished in 2011, and the commissioning will starts at 2012.

SENJU, named after the thousand armed Goddess of Mercy, is a single crystal time-of-flight Laue diffractometer proposed to the MLF at J-PARC. The diffractometer is dedicated for precise crystal and magnetic structure analyses under the combined extreme conditions using a small sample less than 1 $$mm^3$$. TOF-Laue technique coupled with wide area 2D detectors enables the efficient measurements and improves the completeness of the data. A WLSF-type scintillator detector developed for iBIX was modified to meet the requirements of SENJU. Although the construction schedule has been delayed because of the earthquake, on-beam commissioning will start in 2012.

Li conduction pathway in cathode material, LiMn$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$, for Li ion battery studied by neutron diffraction method

The crystal structure of LiMn$$_{2}$$O$$_{4}$$ was analyzed by the Rietveld method using the neutron powder diffraction. The neutron scattering length density map was also analyzed to investigate the Li conduction path by the maximum entropy method. The crystal structure was refined with the space group, ${it Fd}$-3${it m}$(origin choice 2) with a lattice constant, ${it a}$ = 8.2442(3) ${AA}$ at room temperature. Li, Mn and O atoms occupied 8${it b}$, 16${it c}$ and 32${it e}$ sites, respectively. The cation mixing at Li and other metal sites was not observed. The neutron scattering length density map exhibits 3-dimensional Li conduction pathway clearly, indicating the Li through the 8${it b}$-16${it e}$-8${it b}$ sites.

Current status of HRPD at JRR-3

High Resolution Powder Diffractometer (HRPD) at the neutron beam line of the Japan Research Reactor-3, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) is a versatile general purpose powder diffractometer for a wide field of structural studies. According to the basis of the section of "Utilization of Radiation" in JAEA's commission "Framework for Nuclear Energy Policy", the HRPD has widely opened for user visitors since the establishment of JAEA in October 2005. Because of high quality, easy operation, and a large number of demands for the determination of the crystal structures, the HRPD become one of the most active spectrometers in JRR-3. In this presentation, the details of the current status and topics of the HRPD will be reported.

Modulated crystal structure of layered cobaltate $$alpha$$'-Na$$_{x}$$CoO$$_{2}$$ (${it x}$ $$sim$$ 0.75)

The crystal structure of a polycrystalline sample of $$alpha$$'(O1)-type Na$$_{x}$$CoO$$_{2}$$ (${it x}$ $$sim$$ 0.75) has been determined by means of the (3+1)-dimensional superspace group approach using powder neutron diffraction. The structural parameters were refined with a superspace group of ${it C}$2/${it m}$(${it p}$0${it q}$)00. The positional modulation of Na atoms along the ${it a}$-axis is most significant; the ${it x}$ coordinate approaches +0.18 at ${it x}$ $$sim$$ 0.32, while it is negatively shifted to -0.18 at ${it x}$ $$sim$$ 0.68. For both extreme cases, the ${it x}$ position of Na atoms is deviated $$sim$$ 0.9 ${AA}$ from (0,1/2, 1/2), nearly touching neighboring.

Neutron capture study using the ANNRI

The Accurate Neutron-Nucleus Reaction measurement Instrument (ANNRI) has been installed at the beam line no. 4 of the Material and Life science experimental Facility (MLF) in the J-PARC. It was constructed in order to supply accurate neutron capture cross sections of minor actinides and fission products required for developing innovative nuclear systems. The ANNRI project team has started the measurements of neutron capture cross sections of minor actinides and fission products, and successfully obtained the neutron capture cross sections of these isotopes at the resonance energy region, including $$^{244}$$Cm. The ANNRI is a unique instrument for high-resolution neutron-capture $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy by utilizing the high-intensity pulsed-neutron beam and the high-efficiency Ge spectrometer. It is expected to be used not only for the development of innovative nuclear systems, but also for the study of nuclear astrophysics and for the analyses of trace elements.

We have developed neutron polarizing and non-polarizing supermirrors by using the ion beam sputtering (IBS) technique for the J-PARC/NLF. The performance of the supermirrors fabricated in the JAEA and the recent studies of the multilayer consisting of a supermirror to realize a supermirror with a higher performance are presented.

Dynamic structure factor for random copolymers investigated by neutron spin echo

To study dynamics of polymers on the molecular level, it is necessary to perform experiments in the wide spatiotemporal scale. Neutron spin echo (NSE) technique allows us to access the time scale from sub-nanosecond to sub-microsecond with the length scale from sub-nanometer to sub-micrometer with relatively little efforts. Another important feature of the neutron scattering is deuterium labeling, i.e., with neutrons as probe, contrast variation techniques based on hydrogen/deuterium replacement can be used to modify the visibility of different component in the system. In this study, the dynamic structure factors of a linear random block copolymer with deuterated and protonated monomers were measured by NSE quantitatively, and were compared with those of the fully protonated polymer with the same polymerization degree. The observed dynamic structure factors have confirmed the high measurement accuracy of the NSE spectrometer in Japan.
